@ukwildcat1998 I copied the above link. I went into the scan tab and created a scan with new indicator. I selected uparrow as value, and then again as true - to get it to work, but I keep getting the " ERROR: Trying to self-assign a non-initialized rec: state. "

I do not know what that means. Any other suggestions? Is there something obvious I am missing?? Sorry, I am trying, but it is not scanning yet. I appreciate all of your efforts.

Thanks,
Lauri

Volatility Trading Range

VTR is a momentum indicator that shows if a stock is overbought or oversold based on its Weekly and Monthly average volatility trading range.

Download the indicator

@hurricane5 It's fairly simple to do it. Add the code as an indicator (but do not use it on your chart since it's intended to be used in the Scan tab). Once you have it added, switch over to the Scanner section.

Click on Add Study Filter > Study > type in the name of the indicator > and select upArrow or downArrow.

Please add a video tutorial. I am getting a rather different input.

So this below 200 line script was in a TOS screenshot download from this site a few weeks ago. There is no author name and some of the remarks are a bit cryptic. The script appears to contain multiple moving averages, Zig-Zag, pivots, Fib's, alerts, volume stuff, boxes / bubbles, etc. I'm no Script coder but I know enough to change "no" to "yes" or "hide" to "show plus remark out code with the "#" key. My real trick is changing colors. I've played around with the script and use mainly the reversal or "Rvs" balloons. The rest appears not to do a dayum thing. My opinion is someone attempted to combine various studies into a single script or construct a one-stop trading strategy. I would really appreciate anyone willing to have a look below and enlighten me as to how to make the various components work so I could at least review the script for my use. Thanks in advance for any input offered.

@RDMercer you are right, someone probably combined/modified the script extensively. What colors do you wish to change. Just look for the statement called AddChartBubbles, should be an easy change.

If you are looking for a fibonacci retracement study, you might like to check out post #31 at the following thread

https://usethinkscript.com/threads/auto-fib-fibonacci-levels-indicator-for-thinkorswim.14/page-2
I made a minor enhancement by introducing an input selector for the colors of the retracement labels. You can select from any of the colors listed - red, orange, green, etc and bubbles for all the fib retracements will utilize that color.

@RDMercer I have mentioned this in the beginning, this indicator is a combination of different studies, and some don't even do anything, like you said. I have dropped my focus from the trend reversal after finding out that it repaint due to having the ZigZag indicator.

@BenTen is exactly right! The mega study that @RDMercer posted comprises many different components, notably some variant of what appears to be a Zig Zag High Low Supply Demand study that someone did 4-5 years ago, possibly more. That said, I took a quick look at the study, there are some notable and interesting portions.

The beginning section of the code is some sort of a moving average alignment study, what I have done is to extract the logic and crafted what I'd call a moving average alignment study with bullish and bearish undertones. Candles on the chart would be colored green if there is a bullish state, red if bearish state and yellow if neutral. Also included alerts for state transitions. As this is a complete revamp, I have used internal variables names of my choice to better represent the underlying price action

Enjoy this folks!

Code:
# Moving Average Alignment
# tomsk
# 11.15.2019

# Extracted idea from RDMercer's post #369 of the following thread

@RDMercer I have mentioned this in the beginning, this indicator is a combination of different studies, and some don't even do anything, like you said. I have dropped my focus from the trend reversal after finding out that it repaint due to having the ZigZag indicator.
Thanks for responding! Actually the reversal bubbles are clever... and are virtually identical two other trend studies. You get props as that's what I use primarily. How does one get the Fib lines to draw? Or Fib levels to be visible on the left or right border? I'm fine if they don't function but am wondering what can be ditched that won't function just to save a bit of processor overhead? Perhaps you have an updated or "cleaned up" version? Thank you again.

Extracted this idea from @RDMercer post #369 of a variant of a massive Zig Zag High Low Supply Demand study that comprises many different components

https://usethinkscript.com/threads/...-signals-for-thinkorswim.183/page-19#post-369

I heavily modified, cleaned up and extracted some interesting Zig Zag statistical information resulting in a study called Zig Zag High Low Stats. It displays the following information represented via bubbles at each of the Zig zag turning points

Label for Confirmed/Unconfirmed Status of Current Zigzag
Price Change between Zigzags
Price at Zigzag High/Low
Bar Count between Zigzags
Volume at Zigzag Reversals

I posted it at this new thread

I'm working on a TOS strategy based on the Mobius trend reversal indicator.
https://usethinkscript.com/threads/trend-reversal-indicator-with-signals-for-thinkorswim.183/
I want to add some additional performance stats to the strategy (based on it's historical performance for the underlying symbol). A few of the stats i'm looking to add:
  • Cumulative Return (Count and Percent);
  • Max Drawdown (Percent)
  • Max Drawdown Period (Date Range)
  • Profit Factor (Float)
  • Win Rate (Count and Percent)
  • Avg trade duration (Float)
  • Avg Win/Loss (Float)

Ideally I'd like to display these stats in the Databox to trim down on the noise for each chart, but I'm not sure if TOS supports that? Alternatively, if that's not possible i was thinking a lower indicator with chart bubbles would work as well. But I'm not 100% sure where to start. Any suggestions?

With some inspiration from from this post: https://usethinkscript.com/threads/...or-with-signals-for-thinkorswim.183/post-9356 I started digging into the original indicator code a bit further and realized that some of the basic data I'm looking for is already available (for the most part). I just have to work out how to accommodate for the repaint events and then display the data in the DataBox instead of as chart bubbles (looks as if the DataBox only displays plot data). Will share what i end up coming up with.

@eddielee394 The repainting part of this indicator makes all backtesting strategy useless. If you could figure out how to combat that, you got something. Let us know how it goes.

@BenTen For sure, will do. I'm not super proficient with more advanced thinkscript syntax so for the sake debugging, any suggestions on the best approach to force or identify a historical repaint event (besides comparing the indicator on a static chart with "real-time" onDemand data )? I feel like going through searching for false signals using onDemand is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. :)

This a good indicator but difficult to stay on it, Because sometimes it gives you an alert bullish/bearish and if the stock broke that alert it vanish.

If someone can help me find an automated bot based on it, it will be great. or something to make it more solid.

Curious to know what you will find. I really like this indicator, even on smaller timeframes like the 3min but the re-painting made me remove the indicator because it`s important for me to backtest properly so if you can possibly find a way to modify the code to not re-paint, that would be great!

I have done already some backtesting using the on demand but it`s just way too time consuming.
