Why when I toggle this plot that I've added to a study it makes the study look all smushed?

It changes very little unfortunately.
that merryday link isn't meant to 'fix' a study. it explains why plots can become squished.
it usually happens when a plot is added to a chart, that is far away from the candles.
that is what is happening in your study. you are plotting a zero line. on a tesla chart, that is forcing $1000+ price spread on a chart.

I'm using it with other studies. An issue I'm running into is that you can't read the numbers without zooming in, and then when you do zoom in everything looks squished.

But with the plot that shows the numbers disabled, it looks MUCH better.

The values above and values below painting strategies will always print above the high and below the low of the associated price bar, regardless of whether there are price bars or not.
