Changing market indicator adjustments

People with a lot more experience than me talk about adjusting your indicators based on the changing market.
For example, I mainly scalp /ES using MACD w/ 3,12,18, but maybe other levels are better; some people use 24,52,9; some use the default levels.

My question is, how do you adjust it to what is right for you? People aren't really changing one number and back-testing it 100 times, are they? Is there a method to dialing it in? It would take a year to test everything from 3,12,18 to 24,52,9.

Hopefully someone can help.
Thanks in advance.

@sinistralleo Actually, yes, backtesting is how you determine what indicator settings work... You make a slight adjustment, do a lookback on several regularly traded symbols, and determine whether there is improvement or not... Rinse, repeat, until you find the sweet spot... And when the market environment changes, your settings may need to as well...

What you are looking for is improved alignment of your indicators for the price action and timeframe(s)... As an example, I use different settings for TTM_Squeeze on a 5m/10m/15m timeframe than I do for 30m... It's one of those things where if you want it bad enough you put in the time and effort...

Now, some platforms have methods of doing this for you, so I've heard, but Thinkorswim has no such feature...

My luck the market would change during the time it would take to dial it in. lol
I'm curious how other platforms accomplish this now.
