What does input displace mean in thinkScript code?

Hello,

Im trying to understand what "displace" means, and I cannot find anything for definitions at all on the thinkorswim learning center. when I google it, I get the same results for Displaced EMA and Displacer. any insight in to what exactly this means would be greatly appreciated.
I'm writing some scripts for "price channel" and displace is one of the parameters.

For SMA default script, you can change the displacement and the length of the indicator.
plot SMA = Average(price[-displace], length);
How would I add a code displacement and length to lower down the upperband or is it a fixed variable?
plot VWAP = price;
plot UpperBand = price + numDevUp * deviation;
plot LowerBand = price + numDevDn * deviation;
I tried this, but it's giving me an error. Displace works if I do, input displace = 0; but not with, input length = 0;
plot VWAP = price;
plot UpperBand = ((price + numDevUp * deviation[-displace], length));
plot LowerBand = price + numDevDn * deviation;
Actually, to make it simpler, I want the factors and the functions the same. I don't know how to explain this in code, but in math, x^2 is on the origin of the graph, but when you add (x^2 - 2) it shifts downwards 2 levels.
