Reinstall think or swim from rescued hard drive

Hi thank you for helping.

My laptops controller crash last week. I have a new one and reinstalled TOS. I was able to rescue the old hard drive but not able to resurrect the computer. I liked my custom modifications and how do I move over the files to the new machine. I see program files/thinkorwim from the old machine. The new machine looks like it installed TOS in appdata/local/thinkorswim . I renamed the usergui directory and copied that directory from the old hard drive, but modifications did not come back. Which files should I move over.

Most of the TOS data is stored online. In theory, all you should need is your workspace file.

That file typically resides in "C:\Program Files\thinkorswim\workspace.<YOUR_WORKSPACE_NAME>.xml"

If you can recover that file, put it in your TOS directory and login everything else should transfer over, including studies and layout.

Additionally, you can just delete your entire usergui folder and it will come back. It is not necessary and doesn't contain any of your customization.

@trader_dennis, as @armybender stated, you will need your workspace file. Your studies are secure on TOS servers but TOS does not maintain the workspace files, Workspace file resides in your \thinkscript folder, at the same level as usergui folder. usergui is disposable.

Since you have recovered usergui folder. Chances are high that your workspace file is accessible too.

Your changes and configuration outside of your scripts reside in that workspace file. In the future, you could modify scripts, and then that mod will be available without a workspace file.

Backups copies are like dual or 4 engine passenger aircraft. Each engine alone can carry you to safety. Backups are necessary. But seeing the silver lining most likely you have workspace available you to right now . Under worst case scenario at least your studies are safe [however, pursuant to safety and recovery you still need to download and back those scripts in more than one device and location]

1) Another way to use workspace file is to copy it to a new computer. This will allow you to recreate your old environment; Or to take your modification, configuration and TOS windows definitions to another computer.

2) You can have two computers or two windows desktops (Win 11) /x11 or two copies of TOS running at the same time as long as it is within the same IP premise of the entity(different computer of course will have different ip's). TOS will allow simultaneous login to your account
