Custom study for Scan

Could someone explain to me how custom studies work with a scan? I'm a developer in real life, but what I'm fuzzy on is when you create a study what do you "return" from your script so ThinkOrSwim would identify it as "true" or "false" condition?

a scan study ends with 1 output function , plot, to define a true / false formula or variable.
true values will be returned in the scan list.
plot z = (close > 10);

some say it may be better to use a formula to define the possible values. i use both ways.

plot z = if (close > 10) then 1 else 0;

When you add a custom study to a scan, you can then define within that scan what you are looking for within the custom study.
This would be a defined variable or plotted signal within the custom study being a defined value in the scan.

Could I get a simple example? Like what if I want to return that price > 10, as a ridiculous example.
